In an interview given today to Liam Crowley of ScreenRant to promote his new project, The Rule of Jenny Penn, John Lithgow officially confirmed that he will play the headmaster of Hogwarts in Max’s Harry Potter series. Although the 79-year-old actor did not reveal any details about the series, he admitted that accepting the role was a difficult decision due to the enormous time commitment it represents at this stage of his career.
Well, it came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid. But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision. I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes.

Lithgow’s comment makes him the first actor officially confirmed for the cast of the Harry Potter series. It’s possible that he wasn’t supposed to reveal this information so early, given Max’s silence on casting announcements so far, but it gives a glimpse into the progress of the project behind the scenes. The series is currently aiming for a release at the end of 2026 or early 2027 on Max, and HBO has confirmed that filming for the episodes will begin in the summer of 2025 at the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, UK.
